らーめん玄
At Ramen Gen, savoury soy sauce and rich pork fat meet the chewy bite of house-made noodles. Start with a small ramen and tailor your bowl with garlic, vegetables, egg and other toppings.
〒155-0031 Tokyo, Setagaya City, Kitazawa, 2 Chome−28−7 エルフェアシティー下北沢201 / ABOUT THE PLACE
At Ramen Gen, the pleasure lies in bringing together the soy-forward broth, noodles, vegetables and pork in each mouthful. Diners have praised the depth of the soy sauce, complemented by the savoury richness of the fat, and the balance of the bowl. Some describe the noodles as chewy and pleasantly springy; another visitor noted that they were a little soft and slightly wavy. Impressions of the broth and noodles vary, but this is a bowl for those who like substantial noodles with a soy-based flavour.
Several visitors have found the pork tender enough to fall apart. The small ramen is one way to keep the portion modest, and the menu also includes a small ramen with extra pork. One diner reported that even the small portion weighed around 300 grams, so anyone unsure how much to order might take a cue from visitors who chose the “small of the small.” Toppings such as garlic, vegetables and fat let you customise the bowl. Diners have added garlic and fat together, chosen extra vegetables, or ordered spring onions and a raw egg. You can also beat the egg and dip the noodles into it. One visitor reported that the spring onions were Fukaya leeks; treat that as a detail of their visit rather than a guarantee of what will be served.
One account describes a quiet dining room, making it a comfortable choice for a solo meal. Visitors have also described the ordering and service as straightforward, so first-timers may find it helpful to take their cue from the flow of the restaurant. Waits vary: some diners have queued for around 10–30 minutes, while others have walked straight in. Reservations are not accepted, and payment is cash only, so come prepared. It is an option in Shimokitazawa when you are in the mood for a Jiro-style bowl with plenty of noodles and pork.
